I am about to cancel Direct TV and I will be left with the box without the card, can you use this Direct TV box as a HDTV tuner and with an HD antenna pick up HD channel over the air for free?

In my experience, it has been the case that you can use a DirecTV receiver with integrated ATSC tuner as a stand alone ATSC over the air tuner. Just make sure you have a good antenna for receiving your local channels and that the receiver you have actually has that tuner built in.
