appreciate the information AV_Integrated and Evil Mind. which projector did you end up buying? also i am looking at the benQ PE8700+ or PE7700 as an option. have u seen it's performance as compared to the nec HT1100 specifically for DVD movies cause that is what i am going to be using it for(not HDTV). Does the extra pixel ratio of 1280x720 of benQ PE8700+/PE7700 as compared to nec HT1100's 1027x768 really make a difference to 480i/480p dvd movies? | moderator Joined: Mar 28, 2005 Posts: 13,326 |
I'm at a different budget as well - I have a Panny PTL-300U which is a 960x540 LCD projector (16:9). I have not seen any of the entry level HD2+ projectors. The Sharp Z-12000, the Sim2 HT300e... yes, I've seen those, but those are $10K+ projectors, so they don't match your price point.
Check all the reviews and do some asking and looking about the HD2+ projectors that are at your price point. While customer service matters, what you want most of all is a projector that simply works really well. If it works, then customer service doesn't matter - you won't call them. manu5641 - Unless you're going to upgrade to HDTV use in the next 2-3 years, you're best off getting a 480p or 1024x576 (Matterhorn) resolution projector. Less (or no) scaling is always better. If you can afford it, a Stewart Grayhawk (dark room) or Firehawk (moderate ambient light), or a Vutec SilverStar (normal to bright ambient light) will make more of a difference. The textured surface of the Grayhawk adds a dimensional quality to the image that is quite impressive.
If you have to have DLP, check out the SIM2 Domino 18 or 20. The 18 or 20 are 1024x576, but the scaling is so incredible, a room full of A/V professionals thought it was the HD-res Domino 30. Any of the Sharp or Optoma HT DLP projectors will be awesome values for the money as well. Check the reviews for limitations on each model.
It just doesn't make sense these days to deal with an external anamorphic lens when better options are available for the same or less money. And don't pay attention to the manufacturer's Contrast Ratings. TI rated the absolute maximum contrast ratio achievable by the HD2+ chip at ~2800:1, I believe. Yet most manufacturers rated their HD2+ equipped pj's at 3000:1 or higher. |
