Hello everyone,

Quick question in relation to screen gain. I have a Optoma GT1080HDR that I plan to project to a 150" screen. Seating distance would be about 11-12ft away (IMAX experience).

The general consensus seems to be dark treated room = white screen, and low/high ambient light = grey/ALR. I have a dedicated space, everything's painted flat black (including ceiling), no ambient light.

When I look at the foot lambert calculator on projectorcentral for my model, a 1.0 gain screen is reading at 56.78 FTL for 150". Given this is not within the 16-26 FTL recommended for dark rooms, how low do you have to go here? Am I misreading something, or is my 3800 lumen projector just that bright?

Thanks!
B

Your projector isn't NEARLY that bright. Optoma has a tendency to severely overstate their brightness claims. Also, the claim is for absolute PEAK brightness, not calibrated and accurate brightness. This is why reading reviews is so very important.

Generally speaking though, you can run the projector in low lamp mode, which makes it quieter and the lamp last longer, and in cinema mode, which is often the most color accurate, and one of the dimmer settings.

This said, a white screen is still the strongest recommendation in a properly treated dark cinema, and will help the image 'pop' when there are bright details on the screen.
