Topic: NEC M323W - Dirty Optics?

Hello all, I was recently given an NEC M323W projector secondhand for free. So far, it's working great, apart from these dust/hairs that seem to be internal somewhere. the first link at the bottom shows what the dust looks like when the projector is in focus, the second one shows what it looks like when I focus on the dust itself. I was hoping someone here had suggestions for how to deal with this without messing up the optics. I have experience disassembling & repairing electronics but I don't quite know where to start here. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. https://imgur.com/a/Xv9ks4chttps://imgur.com/a/U49Vv6H | moderator Joined: Mar 28, 2005 Posts: 13,326 |
That looks like dust on the DLP chip. It's a fairly complex piece of work to take the projector apart all the way down to the DLP chip to carefully clean it. There are videos of doing this at www.youtube.com/fixitfrank on some various models.
This is a fairly common issue with DLP projectors unfortunately, and in a clean room it doesn't happen as often, but does occur. Got it, I was worried it was something like that. Do services exist that would do that cleaning work for me? or is it something that's too expensive to repair to be worth it? If I'm understanding you right I'd need a clean room to do this right without messing it up further. Thank you for confirming what exactly the problem is either way, good to know what I should be looking to fix. | moderator Joined: Mar 28, 2005 Posts: 13,326 |
I've seen someone who just did this in his home. You typically will not make it worse by doing it yourself. It's not like a ton of dust will instantly resettle on the DLP chip if you do it in your home. You just want to be super cautious when doing the cleaning work. It will typically drastically improve the chip if you do a cleaning once it is this dirty. I have a HT2050a that I need to do a cleaning of because it is really bad. I will just do it in my dining room one weekend.
I'm not aware of many electronics repair shops these days. It's just not that common anymore. Certainly you can send it in to NEC and they will do it, but that's not worth it at all. That's encouraging to hear! I've been watching some of the videos you linked to get informed as well, and it seems more manageable than I initially thought. Thanks for all your help! |
