I have an already installed Chief RPA Series ceiling mount that I'm running my old Sanyo PLV-Z2000.

I'm looking to upgrade to the Optoma UHZ50 and I would really like to use the existing mount (the bit attached to the ceiling) and get new a plate that attaches to the Optima UHZ50 (and then into the ceiling bit.)

It appears that the Optoma has 3 mounting holes and I can't figure out what plate would mount to the Optima?? All the kits I see online are for new 'kits' that include both the mount and what appears to be 'universal legs' (4 of them)

Am I missing something in my search for finding a way to do this?

Your existing mount definitely has either a custom plate, or a universal plate that goes along with it. If a custom plate, that was, unfortunately, a poor purchase, because they've had the universal bracket for 20+ years for the RPA series of mounts.

You can often find the universal plate for the RPA series of mounts on eBay as a used product. Sometimes it is easier for find just an old mount with the universal bracket like this one...

Found just the universal interface bracket with all four legs...

If it were me, I would pull off the old 'custom' plate from your existing projector and drill some new holes in it and grab some washers and such from Home Depot to get it to fit your new projector. It's way less money to do this, and will be just as secure if you take your time doing it. I've done this a number of times with 'custom' plates that I modified to fit various projectors. Saves a ton of money overall.

There are sometimes new models like the RSMAU on eBay that might be a similarly good deal that gives you the newer Elite style mount with the better universal interface. For example...

What makes the Elite series better is the fact you can micro adjust everything even after it has all been installed and tightened down. It's a very cool system.

Thank you for your insights. It was a long time ago that I bought the plate and ceiling mount. (2004 or 2005). (I has some other projector before the Sanyo, so I probably bought it back then, then found a Sanyo plate subsequently.)

I like your idea of just drilling holes in the old plate. Thank you for the ebay links. I think I found something on Ebay that might do the trick.

The Optoma has only 3 mounting holes, so I'm going to take a gamble that this one might work.

It's not so much that I'm opposed to getting the new elite style system as it is that I don't want to drill another set of holes in my ceiling. (While I suspect a new Elite system including ceiling mount and plate ~might~ be able to reuse the same screw holes it seems worth the $40 bet that the used Ebay part might do the trick.)

Thank you for your time responding to my question.

Yes, that plate will work with your old RPA mount just fine and is a solid solution. If you ever do get a new model, you will need to pick up an extra arm, which they sell on eBay as well from time to time.

Good luck with the Optoma.
