Thanks I swapped the bulbs and it works! - it really is so much brighter that I just left it in. | member Joined: Mar 22, 2023 Posts: 9 |
Just an update with the lamp I purchased from MyProjectorLamps as recommended on this site. It exploded spectacularly without warning at 1488hrs 14 months after I purchased it in April of 2023. I don't think I can recommend MyProjectorLamps as this is the shortest (and most violent) time any or my previous 3rd party bulbs have lasted. At least the glass bits were confined to within the larger glass reflector housing.
There doesn't seem to be any alternatives available other than these 3rd party no-names even when they advertise OEM bulbs (which they are not - the MyProjectorLamps has Panasonic printed on the glass bulb which I'm sure they never manufactured their own bulbs even when I had the OEM Panasonic bulb/assy).
It could be just a bad bulb, but I think I will try for a cheapy Amazon $56 bulb as they are all from China nowadays and roll the dice as the $180 bulbs only last 14 months now. The Panasonic OEM for $500 used to last 4-5yrs, then $200 now last 2-3yrs, then a $180 last 14months. Let's see what a $56 bulb can last - its not like I have the option to spend more and get the brand name OEM bulb anyways now. | moderator Joined: Mar 28, 2005 Posts: 13,325 |
I know that the lamp in my original Panasonic PT-L300U projector only lasted about 1,400 hours. That was in low-power mode for the entire duration. It does seem weird, but lamps are more voodoo than science it often feels like with some people getting 5,000 hours, and others getting 1,000 hours from the same lamp.
It is certainly your decision, but I would still stick with known reputable manufacturers as the problem with the no-name lamps is that they often lack proper UV protection and can run hot. The concern isn't so much about the lamp failing in a couple hundred hours, but destroying your projector along the way which is a common theme. Melted optics, damaged LCD polarizers, etc. are a common theme among people who buy unknown lamps off Amazon/eBay.
But, I understand the frustration when you spend a bit more money and don't get 2,000+ hours of use out of that lamp. Yeah, but I would gladly pay $4-500 for the original Panasonic OEM lamp but they just don't make it anymore. Even looking now, the only alternatives are $56-$180 and the $180 doesn't seem to be any better which is what I had. I've gotten at least 16-17 great years out of my Panasonic PT-AE2000, if the new bulb fries my projector, I guess its time to look at one of those new laser projectors without a lamp that I've been eyeing for a few years | member Joined: Mar 22, 2023 Posts: 9 |
A little update for anyone interested in the $56 lamp from Amazon - its really dim now after 212 hours, its started off ok, but now its pretty dim. They advertised a 150 day warranty and when I asked them about it and sent them pictures, they say its my projector and its too old and needs to be serviced - LOL!
I wish there was some way of buying a better bulb/lamp as I would gladly pay more for a quality product. But the Lamp I previously got from MyProjectorLamps also was of questionable quality, the glass on the bulb was stamped with "Panasonic" which I knew they didn't make the glass bulbs themselves because I still have my original OEM lamp to compare against, so the MyProjectorLamps was also a no-name knock off as well but it did last a bit longer than this Amazon one. |
