I don't know how that felt tape will look on the wall. I bet it will look phony, like "tape on the wall". I don't know the price of velvet either, but you can find out.

What I did was paint my entire screen wall black. Then I hung my DIY screen, so no border needed. I think it looks great, the screen appears to be floating in space.

The tape isn't going on the wall, it's going on the screen edge to cover where it will be staples on the frame. I think it will look good, just not sure if it's as functional as velvet. Sounds like it isn't.

This is a rental house so there's no way I would paint the wall black.

If you spend $25, you should have gotten a few yards of velvet from a fabric store instead.

I personally made a frame, and I used baseboards from Home Depot, wrapped them and stapled them around with velvet, then put the border on the frame as a fully wrapped and true 'frame' for the screen. It looked very good. Wasn't terribly expensive.

I might give this a shot, not planning to start building the screen until tonight or tomorrow. Just purchased all the supplies a couple days ago.
