I have new Toshiba HD-XA2 hi def dvd player. It has 5.1 analog outputs. I have just ordered a DB25 cable with rca terminations on the other end to go from my prepro to the dvd player.

Even though my player plays hi def discs, I have chosen to play only standard def discs because of the outstanding quality of the upconverted picture and the larger screen area of the 4:3 format on my setup.

Since I will only be playing standard def dvd's, I will be limited to DD 5.1 and DTS. I won't be playing the hi-def sound formats. Will using a 5.1 analog connection via DB25 from the prepro to the dvd player be better than a digital coax cable that I am now using?

Somehow, on my screen and projector, the hi-def discs don't seem to be as bright as the standard def discs....and I get a much bigger picture on the standard format discs in 4:3.

I have a 16 ft by 12 ft screen. Please see my system page on the link below. I appreciate your help on this....

thanks......mitch

If this makes you feel maybe a little better I have no plans anytime in the future to buy any HD player. After months of seeing the images from projection tv's runing HD and Blu ray that I still don't see a huge difference. Even regular DVD on a computer screen or my 480p ht projector looks so good I feel no reason to upgrade, and frankely the difference in image quality can be seen but I don't agree that the difference is vast, and I am far from alone in this opinion. A standard DVD with THX mastering on a 720p standard signal closes the gap between it and 1080p.

The difference to me isn't all that vast. As it is I get an image on my 480p projector that is better than what I am seeing in movie theaters and that is good enough I think. The american public is spolied by technology in my opinion. No sooner did 720p get affordable that people were asking when 1080p native units would be affordable. If I was a multi millionaire I would buy a 1280x720 native 3 chip DLP and that is as far as I would go. 1080p native is a big waste of money in my opinion compared to that. Let's see how much flak I get for these comments

Well, the answer, in all seriousness is "maybe". The primary difference is that you will be using the surround decoding and digital to analog convertors of your Toshiba instead of the ones in your receiver. If the Toshiba has better A/D convertors, than the DB25 analog will be better. However if your A/V receiver has better convertors, it will sound better with digital coax.

The only way to know for sure is to try both and see which one you like better. But if it requires buying an expensive cable that you can't return, I'd probably just stick with what you've got.

I had the same question. I bought a samsung up-converting dvd player a couple years back. I hooked it up to my Denon 2803 via 5.1 analog cables. I was told that the analog cables were only necesary for Super audio CD's. After going to Best Buy to get some "SACD", I saw the lack of avable titles and decided that SACDs were not that great. I did buy a SACD and it did sound prety good, but I rarely if ever listen to music in my HT. I've since removed the analog cables and replaced them with a optical because they were so bulky.
