I have an Optoma HD72 projector and am currently using the Graywolf II screen that came with it. I find that there is a sweet spot for this screen and I seem to be sitting about 2 feet below it. Don't get me wrong, the picture is great, but it seems to be brighter from about 2 feet above where I sit. I have total light control in my room and I primarily watch HDTV and movies. Would going to the WA Laminate designer white make watching the projector more enjoyable and more importantly improve the picture?

Tiddler, I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter as you are the master of the WA laminate as you have done rigorous tests on this material.

PS. I was possibly thinking of changing my projector to the HD7100 due to the darkchip 3. Would this make any difference with the laminate screen.

Thanks in advance your suggestions and advice.

Regards,

Hi D,

Actually it was member, wbassett, over at Home Theater Shack that did all the testing on the Wilsonart Laminates. You can find him at Home Theater Shack - Screens | DIY Screens. Please take a look at the The Laminate Screen Thread (Data and detailed information) thread and direct your questions to wbassett.

Now that I have pointed you to the true expert, I will throw my own two cents worth in. I suspect that given the light controlled nature of your viewing habits and the likelihood that your pj is ceiling mounted, you will be very pleased with the performance of the DW laminate.

Good Luck and do post the results of your investigations and some implementation details back here at Projector Central. Laminates have proven to be very good for use as DIY screen material and they are extremely durable. So please help us to get the word out.

Oh, I attached a couple of my favorite screen shots on a Designer White screen.

Well, it's finally done! I received my Optoma HD7100 package including screen. I chose not to use the Graywolf II screen that comes with it and built my own 110" Designer White laminate screen. Used 1X4 material on the back of the screen to brace the laminate and used strips of the same 1X4 and wrapped it in black velvet. The picture quality of the HD7100 is better than my Optoma HD72. The colors are vibrant and the picture on the DW is simply amazing. Great work to the laminate screen testers and advice from all who have made this project possible. It is truly a pleasure to watch movies with this setup. I also know that I won't be worried about cleaning or wrinkles in the screen as I did with my retractable screen I used previously. Attached are some pictures from my PS3 used as a up-converting DVD player.

Thanks again!

Looking mighty fine there Dhoomdhoom!

It's a good thing wbassett took the time to search back through the archives at AVS a year or so ago. When he ran across the laminate info from the past he could see the potential for it as a screen material. Wbassett spent countless hours researching the archives and also contacting the laminate material manufacturers to get RGB data on these materials.

We all owe him our gratitude for bringing this material back into the forefront of the DIY Screen community.
