Thanks to all posters.

Hi i have a Philips Q35 progscan DVD player, and i want to project my movies in progressive scan mode. My projector has an option for this, but i have some questions.

1. The image projected in progressive mode is better?

2. I know that only trhough component, dvi or hdmi cables i can pass the signal to my projector from my dvd, and then, using a VGA (since my projector only have composite, S-video and VGA interfaces) cable to a component (3RCA) terminal is gonna work?

3. Can i make this cable?

4. Is my epson a really progscan projector?

That projector accepts component video through the 15-pin VGA port. All you need is the proper cable. You can make it, if you can find the pin-out diagram somewhere. But it's probably easier just to buy one from Epson.

All LCD projectors are progressive scan. If you send them an interlaced signal, they have to convert it to progressive scan before displaying it.

Is an image sent in progressive mode better? It depends. If the DVD player has a better deinterlacer than the projector, it will be better. If not, it won't. However, component video is better than S-Video even when you sent an interlaced signal. It has better resolution and more accurate color.

about which deinterlacer is better wich one do u think it is?
the one in the dvd or the one in the projector?

I have very small knowledge about this but, when u send a signal in NTSC, from a DVD for example, is interlaced 60 frames per second right, and there is no deinterlacing. Only if u have a TV for example that accepts progressive scan, u can switch on the PROGSCAN funciton. When i watch movies, my projector function to Progressive scan is OFF, and the function in my DVD is OFF too, because if i turn it on in the DVD gives me 2 gray images, since the cable im using, a S-video cable is no capable of this.

Is the above right, or there is deinterlacing in my projector, even with the function OFF?

Interlacing is when a display shows every other line of an image, and then the remaining lines. Like odd lines and then even. Most CRT based televisions are interlaced. Projectors display the whole image at once, so they are never interlaced. Any signal that comes into the projector in an interlaced format gets deinterlaced before it is displayed.

Your DVD player is probably designed so that when you switch on progressive scan, it sends out a signal the S-Video output doesn't handle very well.

Deinterlacing is a very complex topic. In order to deinterlace properly, detection needs to be done about what kind of image is being displayed. Good deinterlacing for film involves a process called 3:2 pulldown, which you will often see on the feature list for displays. Good deinterlacing will give you a set of images that are almost exactly what was seen in the movie theatre. Bad deinterlacing can cause jittery pictures, pixelization, or just a soft image.

I'm not familiar enough with your DVD player to tell you if it has better deinterlacing than your projector. The best approach is just to get the component cable and try the progressive scan switch both ways to see which way looks better. Your eyes are what matters.
