Hello, I'm looking for a projector that I can hang from the ceiling and use to projector down onto a table. Now for most projectors the manufacturers expressly forbid this. I've only found two that don't - the Sony VPL-PX41 and the Projection Design F1.
Both are rather expensive. Does anyone know of any other models that will do this? I've been advised that DLP projectors will be more reliable in this situation. Is this likely to be true?

JoeC,

Could you use a mirror to refelect the image?

Some time ago I mounted a projector, horizontally, in a coffee table with a mirror reflecting the image upwards onto the ceiling. It was a great effect in a reception area of an office.

This would mean that you could use any projector!

Yes I could use a mirror but I was trying to avoid that to keep things simple.

Since I posted this message I've emailed about 8 projector manufacturers
to ask them whether their projectors can do this. I've had 3 replies.
NEC say none of their projectors do this
BENQ say all of their projectors do this
Savill AV say they have some projectors to do this. Savill AV are a UK based AV integrator who have their own brand of projector which I suspect are rebadged from someone else but I'm not sure who.

Its rather looking that this is probably ok for most DLP projectors but not LCD ones (although the Sony VPL PX41 is LCD). At the moment I'm considering between the Savill AV and BenQ models.

JoeC,
I would be cautious and check the manual with any projector you decide to use.

Most manufacturers will void the warranty if the unit is installed other than the way that they recommend. Read the fine print carefully.

I hope that it all goes well.
