Hi,

I have an 120 inch size Elite Cinegrey 3D screen and I'm interested in buying a projector for it. Due to restrictions of my room size and wanting 4k content I will have to go for an ultra short throw projector.

But recently I've heard that a grey screen does not work properly with a ust projector or is not compatible. Can someone advise me if buying one will be a waste of time and what this means please?

Thanks in advance.

You should contact Elite or check their website for the specifications of the screen material. Some screen surfaces do not work well with UST projectors. Others will do just fine.

ALR screens do a terrible job, unless specifically designed for UST, because most need a very long throw lens for it to work at all. I mean, a ALR screen is designed to remove ambient light cast from above, below, the sides, etc. So, if your projector is below the screen, it gets rejected.

The same can be the case with grey screens that have some gain. They are retroreflective and work best with longer throw lenses.

Standard grey screens should actually do just fine with a UST projector. If it is ambient light rejecting, then it just won't work unless it is specifically designed for UST.

If this is the material, then you need a different screen.

Hey, did you figure it out? I have the same issue. I have a viewsonic ls830...trying to set it up in the living room but don't know which screen to get at the best value.

The screen you are looking at, the Aeon CLR, is the screen he will likely need in some form/variation, or he has to go to a standard screen.
