As has been said in these forums, the projector's users manual is a must read.

Now...if you're asking about the main lamp, those do fail. They have a limited life and dim as they age. So anyone with a projector or contemplating buying a projector should budget for replacement lamps about every 1000 hours, regardless of advertised lamp life.

Do not try and save a few bucks by buying a generic or "compatible" lamp. They usually aren't and you will be wasting your money. Buy the OEM lamp specified for your projector.

So...bottom line, your first course of action should have been to check the lamp.

What kind of projector is it? What is the exact make and model?

My first response still applies. Check the lamp.
