VB = Vertical Banding.

It looks like vertical bars on the picture. It's most obvious on screnes with a lot of the same color. The scene that can show it the most is in Star Wars Ep. IV, A New Hope. The Tatoine desert scene - mostly sand. The reason it can be seen here is that they had problems, in the desert heat, the film emulsion was getting too hot. In this case, the VB can be seen on just about any PJ because it's recorded on the DVD (they did a good job of trying to eliminate it, but weren't completely sucessful).

If you're immersed in the movie, you'll never see it.

VB was driving me crazy but after using the flicker tweak and upgrading the firmware, its now bearable. I now have about 200 hours on my bulb. I occasionally have to go into the flicker menu to tweak it but normally its fine. Interestingly, I never see VB on HDTV, only DVDs like Master & Commander. I would rate the VB problem a 6/10.

I had really bad VB for the first few weeks, but after finding out about the flicker tweak & not leaving in standyby it is really not an issue. Since powering off by the main switch everytime its finished cooling I have not needed to do the flicker tweak since. Top notch projector.

It [censored]!!!

After using a left over nec dinosaur on the back of my couch for three years I just knew that when I fired up my new AE700 my pants would be blown off!

I was used to the screen door effect on the NEC but come on, the vertical banding is just as bad as any screen door. It took me a few weeks and some calls to the vendor (visual apex - bought the 3yr warranty) before I realized what I was seeing was not screen door but the ultra modern version of that crap, VB.

OK... so I turn the unit off now AND I try the stupid hidden menu tweak. I think sometimes it just wants to perform and sometimes it just wants to drive me crazy!

The blacks are INCREDIBLE! My pants stay on buy my shoes get blown off every time I screen Blade Runner.

VB is horrible on the Star Wars sand scenes and ANY OTHER light scene, it drives me CRAZY because so many reviews say they have never seen VB on their unit. COME ON.. stop lying!

Someone PLEASE post every known trick to kill this VB monster, it is keeping me up at nights.

AE700 = perfect for dark fare... I use a super break the bank Denon dvd player and it really rocks.

AE700 = really truly [censored] for ALL light scenes though it can be altered though I do not know if the holy water or various tricks make the changes

But for $500 you cannot beat the picture!

cheers

I must have over 600 hrs now... I go to the movies for the popcorn so once we bought a nice maker with a cart on ebay I felt better, then the stinking kettle burned out... but within two weeks they sent me a new one from china. You got to love the 21st century, we send them worthless dollars they send us nice things and build ICBMs with those worthless dollars... hmmm... maybe one day they will send us those too? Maybe I will watch Red Dawn tonight?
