Since this projector was discontinued 6 years ago, you bought it used. Which means that the lamp is most probably also quite used.

So...what you are describing sounds like a lamp that needs replacing. An aged lamp can do this, it will run for a brief period and shut down. It is to weak to maintain "fire".

Of course, it could be something else in the projector that is failing, such as the lamp ballast power supply. But the only way to test is to replace the lamp. I suspect that if it is the lamp and you replace it, you'll see a dramatic difference in the quality of the image. As lamps age, their output dims. At the end of a lamp's life you can expect to have lost at least 75% of the lamps brightness.

hmmm....maybe it is a PT AX 200U? Could be that his bulb life indicator went to 2000....then he would maybe just reset it if the pic still looks good?

A projector that shuts down whne the lamp counter reaches the "magic" number will not power up and shut down. It will NOT power up until the lamp counter is reset using a button sequence on the projector. Not all projectors shut down when the counter has timed out, many continue to operate until the lamp fails.

The fact that his projector powers up then shuts down is an indication of a lamp that is too weak to maintain fire. Something you may see in your own projector as you use your lamp past the lamps rated life.
