Long story short, was researching Plasm vs LCD tvs, when I stumbled on projectors. So great now I have a third option as if 2 wasn't difficult enough. After awhile started leaning toward a projector & was just about ready to buy the Optoma HD20, when I came across something called the Visionmax HD-1080p for around $1000.

Turns out trying to find information on this company is impossible. However their claims are huge for this unit:
Individual calibration of primary and secondary colors
High contrast ratio 15,000:1
Brightness 5,000 ANSI Lumens
Bulb life of 8000 hours
Supports 1080 High Definition Compatibility
MSRP $5,899

I was able to find something that said it was an LCD projector, which right off the bat seems to be a problem for home theater, and an MSRP of $5,899?

I smell a scam involving an inflated MSRP, specs, and a flashy website. Has anyone heard of them before or anything about the projector or company?

Thanks

You should smell a scam for sure.

When a manufacturer is unwilling to provide actual projector information on their site and is QUICK to post the MSRP, but no manual, no detailed specifications (at all) and has an actual selling price which is far less than advertised, then it is a white van company.

Stick with major manufacturers and real product, don't get taken in by scams.

Keep in mind that it's "HD compatible" - not actually a HD projector. "HD compatible" just means that if you feed it a HD source (1080P, based on the model name) it'll display an image. The output resolution is probably 800x600 or possibly 640x480.

This is a very similar scam: http://www.bigscreenforums.com/forum_topic.cfm?which=14455

Point one...turn off your CAPS LOCK, you're SHOUTING!!

Point two...some of us "not so smart street people" have spent YEARS, YEARS in the A/V industry. I, myself have been in the service end for over 25 years. What are YOUR qualifications and credentials, besides being an end-user and a PHD candidate?

So you're satisfied with your experience. Good for you. 10 out of 10 is still an extremely small polling database.

The fact is, the specs and claims are suspect and lacking, and that is a huge red flag. And if one were to perform a Google search for this projector, they would find a lot of reports in OTHER sites and reviews, all agreeing that it is to be avoided, likened to a "white van scam".
