I've got very little to offer here, but I would ask that you might want to check on a more audio specific site such as Audioholics.com which has some good forums and reviews.

I personally haven't listened to many subs under $1,000 that I consider to sound good at all. They are almost always to 'boomy' and ported subs, while they can be loud, don't seem to have any range or control over the bass output.

Personally, I hit www.audiogon.com and look for 50% off pricing on great subs which are used. Speakers can go bad, but I've bought two from there without issue.

For example...

or...
http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?homesubw&1234295794&/B-W-ASW-610

The one thing you will notice is that most subwoofers of quality don't cost anywhere near $200. They've had about 100 used subwoofers listed for sale in the last week and the average price is from about $800 to $1000 with some costing far less (as listed above) and others costing far more.

Want a true kick arse sub?

Hello Drek,
First posts here so please forgive the “greenness” in my response. After reading what your question is all I could think was a response could only truly be helpful if you are able to give info about the size room & what you would be driving your sub w/ & what speakers the sub going to be placed w/ & what sound are you looking for. All of the subs you have listed have substantially different sounds. Without all “pertinent” info one could only describe brands that may be worth considering based on price range & reviews of owners. I would give serious thought to considering the HSU subs(specifically the VTF-1 or STF-2)pronounced “shoe”, brand as the reviews are off the charts & the price range is close to what you’re looking for, a little more, but not by much when you consider the longevity of your intended purchase. Those subs that you have listed are respectable in their price range; however for just a bit more a much higher quality sub can be had. By higher quality I mean frequency response, driver size, I’ve always considered a speaker’s weight relevant as well & let’s not forget the warranty, you know just in case. One last thought if I may. Size does matter, but bigger isn’t always better. I’ve heard in the same room everything the same except we switched subs out 1 right after another (buddy’s house) & experienced sound from 8” & 10” subs that blew some 12”, 15” & even a DIY 22” we built ourselves. I’m currently looking for a cntr & possibly some surrounds myself (new Denon AVR & 50” Sam Plas) & with the choices out there (online mostly) it’s a daunting task at best. I would encourage anyone considering a purchase of any kind like this to visit as many HT & AV forums as possible; there are many references that may help you w/ your choice & I’m sure it will pay great dividends in the end, at least that’s what I keep telling myself after countless hr.’s= days of reading. Besides HSU other brands I would consider at are Energy & Definitive Technology. Sorry for the long read, hope it helped even a little bit. Oh by the way Happy New Year to all!!
