Topic: Screen Size and Mounting the Projector Questions (Newbie)

I need help due to me being confused about some stuff.
I have a dedicated ht room that measures 17x22. Ceiling is 8ft high. I have HT seating that would put my screen at 16' viewing distance.
1. I am thinking about using a 106" screen. I am now thinking it may be too small to get the theater experience. Am I right or will 106" be fine?
2. I will be using a ceiling mount for my new 1080UB. With my 8ft ceiling I am not sure how much drop I need. Help please?
3. I want the picture to be bright just in case I watch some tv in the daytime. (although the room can be completly darkened) What distance is optimum for my 106" screen?
4. If I go larger like say 120" screen, what is the optimum distance for that?
Thanks for helping out a new guy! | member Joined: Aug 12, 2008 Posts: 42 |
For me personally, I prefer something closer to a 110" at 15' away. So for your setup I would prefer anything between a 110" to 120". As far as how much top border you will require, that depends on how high off of the ground you want the image to be. If you would like the image to be 36" from the bottom of the image to the floor, than you would require 6" of top border with an 8' ceiling if you screen case is recessed into your ceiling. For basic math take the height of your ceiling, subtract the image height and the height you want the image to be off of the ground, and you will be left with your top border dimension. For example:
110" diagonal = 54" x 96" image
96"(ceiling) - 54"(image height) - 36"(image to floor) = 6"
116" diagonal = 56.75" x 101"
96"(ceiling) - 56.75"(image height) - 36"(image to floor) = 3.25"
120" diagonal = 59" x 105"
96"(ceiling) - 59"(image height) - 36"(image to floor) = 1"
For 110" you should be putting your projector roughly 12' back, 116" about 12.5' and for 120" about 13' back. | --- Advertisement ---

If you like sitting in the middle of the movie theater, and want that feeling at home, then you need about a 120" wide screen, maybe a bit larger.
That's about a 136" diagonal or so.
It may sound 'huge', but it is really appropriate for that size room and that seating distance. If you know you will be sitting closer than 16' regularly, or you don't like sitting in the middle of the theater, then going smaller is obviously your choice.
Don't be confused on this. The recommendation for this size is NOT like sitting in the front row of a properly designed theater, but is meant to recreate the seats in the dead center of a properly designed commercial theater.
I certainly wouldn't recommend going smaller. AV Integrated - Theater, whole house audio, and technology consultation during the build and installation process in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. | member Joined: Nov 7, 2008 Posts: 2 |
Projector drop distance is pretty subjective. Generally, you will want your projector mounted at eye level, but it varies based on furniture, room layout, etc. Chief Manufacturing offers a variety of extension columns for mounting projectors, http://www.chiefmfg.com/productdetail.aspx?AccessoryID=236WT.blog=projectorcentral | --- Advertisement ---
