on a panasonic pt-ax200u or sanyo plv-z5 is it really worth it to buy in to the upconverting dvd players?

if so, does anyone have a suggestion as to a brand/model that is reasonable? i hear the oppo's are good?

At this point in time, I say no. Some of the Toshiba HD players are almost as cheap as the Oppos. Plus you get a REAL HD player.

There are reports of the Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player dropping to $198 real soon now. I think that from that point forward, there will always be a brand name HD-DVD player in the under $200 price point. We may even see $149 by early next year. If the ODM no-name manufacturers get in on the action, we could even see $99 next year. That will make HD-DVD a reasonable upsell from standard DVD even for non-techies.

The A2 is 1080i, but on projectors with good scalers it won't make much difference. And for those of us with 720p projectors it's a very good solution.

On that note, I think that the Oppo was a good deal a year ago, but in today's market it's not a good buy.
