Topic:   Epson HC720 vs Pan PT-AX200U & others

Jan 30 2008 just saw Optoma HD640 model with 92" screen at Costco for $979.00 CDN. Just started to research if this will be adequate for our home theatre. Part number was 95.89F01GCOA if that helps

Topic:   Optoma HD65

After the H31 and the HD7100 (huge and unreliable pj with a great picture when you finally get it running) I bought the HD65. The first fascination comes with its simple-elegant design and its tiny size. Only 4 color wheel and the old dark chip 2 - but newer technology for the rest. I connect it through an upconverting oppo player from dvi to hdmi (version 1.3 on this pj) and hdmi to hdmi hd satellite signal. I just project a 75 inch diagonal picture on a pull down greywolf II from the table top in front. After the projection is finished you would not even know that there was ever a home theatre in the room. Within 3 minutes all is installed or de installed. Getting such a bright, precise picture (and that in econo) out of such a "little thing" is the first surprise. Colors are very accurate and blacks are satisfying. The 7100 showed better blacks. Impossible to see pixels from 10 feet on a 75 inch diagonal picture. Rainbows very seldom and that in the usual scenario (fast moving eye balls on white letters with a dark back ground). Menu options are plentifull - almost too much since you spend a lot of time twisting all of them. The overall picture quality compared to the 7100 is not better - 7100 has the edge over it with better blacks and may be more depth (hard to put a finger on it out of memory). But a dark chip 3 and 3 times larger optics should show a difference. But the pq difference is not significant enough justifying to put up with an unreliable, noisy and huge projector. Besides an uncomplicated start up the HD65 has a super wide feature which adds 100 horizontal lines to 2:35 size picture creating smaller black horizontal bars. It takes away a bit of the left and right part of the picture - not enough for me not to engagage that feature. More impressive presentation in 2:35 although it does not work with my dvi to hdmi connection (more research involved). There are more things which I will verify but so far it has been a very positive experience - a recommanded machine in my set up and for my eyes. Would be nice to read someone elses first impression on this unit.

Topic:   Epson HC720 vs Pan PT-AX200U & others

Sorry for the delay in response but was off to CES last week. The pricing I was using was fairly preliminary and yes it was the US pricing for the Pan AX200U (~1299) that I based my comment on. A quote I received from a Canadian online vendor came in at $1900 for the Pany, vs $1150 for the Mits so you are right. Actually having done some further investigation I have now changed my preference to the Optoma HD65. It is just relatively new replacement for their HD70 (HD65 has 1600 vs 1000), it also supports 1080p24 for the eventuality of purchasing Blueray DVD, and it gets good ratings with a price sub $1k. There was a single posting on the AVS forum from a fellow Canuck suggesting that Costco has the HD65 selling as an HD640 model, but haven't looked into this. If you or anyone else has heard anything on the HD65, let me know. Finally almost ready to buy!!

Topic:   puzzled that xbox plays in b&w when set to 60hz

its strange but my original xbox(when set to 60hz)plays fine on every projector ive tried, except the new optoma HD65 which i just bought.i have to take it off the 60hz setting to get it to work.the HD65 is high def so it should support 60hz.although the xbox and all the games are PAL it says "found NTSC" and displays in b&w on the 60hz setting.im sure the hd65 is a uk machine as well as i bought it here from dixons online.wld appreciate any ideas.its not actually making any difference to how the games play though.thanks
