Here's my home theatre.
Projector - Pro-Cinema 1080UB
Screen - 100" Stewart Filmscreen Firehawk G3
Speakers - Paradigm
Power Amplifiers - Harman Kardon and Yamaha
Processor - Anthem
Many hours of toiling to complete this basement home theatre. I did tons of research on equipment, configurations, wiring etc. and still made mistakes. Make sure the wiring you put in and the equipment you are going to use now and in the future are compatible. The HDMI cable I ran to my projector in the ceiling is an HDMI 1.1 cable. It won't pass an HDMI 1.3 signal from my processor. Make sure to run a conduit in the ceiling for cables if you have a dry-walled ceiling. Don't skimp on wiring either, do your research and determine the proper guage of wiring for the distances run. |

Final Stage: DIY Automated Horizontal Masking Screen..
Finally after almost 3 years of waiting I had enough saved and some time available to finish my home theatre. Some of the improvements made are:
Freshly painted and re-carpeted room.
DIY Back lit poster boxes which can be switched on/off via remote control.
Motorized canvas with abstract art added to existing screen.
New Epson TW-2000 1080p Projector. This Thing rocks!!!!!!!!!
Updated HTPC with HDMI connection to projector.
Pic1: This picture shows the cinema when it is not in use. I got bored of just seeing a huge 100" white screen during the day when the cinema was not in use. So I decided to modify the screen and add another motorized blind and hopefully turn it into a 100" work of art. This time I needed more than just my technical abilities, I needed to paint something artistic "Not one of my strengths".
Pic2: Here you can see the canvas retracted halfway up the screen. The motor will cutout when it reaches to the top of the screen.
Pic3: The canvas fully retracted I am now ready to view a movie in 16/9 format.
Pic4: This shot shows the horizontal masking for formats other than 16/9. These can also be positioned any where up to 1/3 into the screen.
Pic5: A shot of the other side of the room.
Pic6: Here is where I began modifying the existing screen to fit the motorized canvas in. The bare timber on the perimeter of the screen was added to increase the cavity to allow for the extra hardware.
Pic7: Another angle of the previous pic.
Pic8: A closer look at the hardware.
Pic9: A closer look at the geared motors. Hardware that can easily be purchased from local hardware and electronic component shops.
Pic10: Before I attacked the canvas with a paint brush I decided to test my artistic ability on a A4 sheet of paper first.. After several designs I decided to use the one shown. I sketched with pencil the sample onto the canvas and then applied the paint. Anyone with some artistic know how could really create a master piece! The possibilities are endless... In the end I achieved the effect I desired without mistake. Phew!!
Pic11: The completed Canvas ready to hang.
Pic12-16: Some night shots of the room.. Finally complete.
Overall I am very pleased with the result. I hope to rest now and actually enjoy watching some movies. The screen was approximately 2 weeks work and the back lit poster took 1 week including installation.
Cheers
George
Ps. If you want to know more about the motorized screen look at my earlier post "DIY Automated Horizontal Masking Screen" |
