I've had my Optoma HD 7100 for a few years now, and the bulb just died recently. It's a sweet projector and has really served me well.
My question is, would my money be better spent towards a new projector in the $2000 and under range, or should I just purchase a new bulb?
I haven't been following the technology lately, so I'm not sure how much of a quality step up I would get with the newer projectors in that price range compared to my Optoma 7100. The new Panasonic AE4000 seems intriguing.
Of course I'd rather not spend over $1500 if the quality increase would be negligible.
My set up is 118" Carada screen in a "bat cave" dark room, seating is approximately 12' from the screen. |

I was looking for a bluray player for Optoma HD7100 and ran into the DMP-BD70V Blu-Ray Player. It plays blurays but also vhs tapes which it will upconvert up to 1080p. So I was curious if anyone had heard anything about this? Do you think it would do a better job with vhs tapes than my JVC SVHS player? With my JVC I just use an s-video cable and run it straight to my projector. I was thinking about eventually getting a video scaler to help the quality, but do you think this bluray player would do a better job? Or would it really be better than the VCR I have now? Also another question, I am going to buy a bluray player but also want something that can do an excellent job upconverting my DVD's. So was looking at Denon 2910 DVD players and Oppo DVD players for that. Do you think those would do any better than Bluray Players at upconverting? Or should I just use my bluray player to upconvert? I know this is a lot of questions but any help would be appreciated. |

I recently purchased a HD7100 off of ebay for around four hundred dollars. The projector is phenomenal, besides some random bulb striking issues. Anyway I am currently just using a standard sony dvd player from around 2007. It has component and does 480p which is then upscaled by the projector to 720p. I was curious if I were to buy a nice upscaling dvd player such as an oppo, would I get much of an increase in picture quality? Or would the internal scaling of the projector be better than the one in the oppo? Also I heard HD7100's when using and DVI cable(well DVI cable with an HDMI adapter for the DVD player)you lose the lowest or lower levels of black. Is this true and is there anyway to avoid this?
Thanks for any help! |

My projector colors are shifting from full color to a kind of lavish green.
My lamp is not old, about 400 hours.
This problem is now constant with a non stop color to green and green to color shift every two to five minutes.
Any idea?
Thank you :) |

I found a great deal on these projectors. They are essentially within 100 dollars of each other, the HD71 being a bit more $ .
The HD7100 is a bit older, but it has a better native contrast with no Image AI. It also employs the Darkchip3 vs. the HD71 which is Darkchip2.
The HD71 blows the HD7100 away in Lumens @ 2500 lumins vs. HD7100 @ 1000 lumens.
Finally, the HD7100 only has DVI, no HDMI. Is this a deal killer?
I want to use for a home theater, with light control only at night. I plan to watch a regular TV during the day. I am not painting my walls black or anything...
Should I go for the Lumens of the HD71 or the contrast of the HD7100? |
