Recently I have been getting color flashing after about an hour of run time. It doesn't matter what the program source is because it does it with my Satellite receiver as well as my DVD player. The unit is about 3 or 4 yrs old and on it's 3rd lamp.
What happens is after an hour the color of the picture flickers to something like a negative. Like everything will have a red hue, then normal, then green, normal. The picture is steady, doesn't roll or anything, just color flashing. I was thinking heat may have something to do with it, so I checked the air intake to see if it was blocked. There was some dust on it, but not much. I vacuumed it off, but it did nothing to stop it. I am considering opening the cover to see if there is any build up inside.
Anyone ever seen this? What is the probability of a repair vs. replacement? |

Not sure what is going on here. I am on a city owned analog cable tv system. I have had Comcast "digital" cable. On both of these my projector over the last few months has started to have a blue or green "shadow" beside objects. Sort of like the convergence was out of whack. Football helmets that were heavy red with blue would have a green shadow. Purple colors would be sometimes almost green. I HAVE NOT CHANGED ANY SETTINGs, that I know of. Could this just be a degredation of cable signal? I am on a fairly long run. Please suggest what I should do. Is there adjustments that I can make or does this call for service from a pro? I probably need to do a cleaning, but don't think that would solve the problem. I am using a TIVO now as a tuner but was using comcast box before and had same results. Please help. I cannot stand the picture during football season. Thanks in advance |

Well, I've sent my input to Optoma and waited 2 weeks. End result is that I've heard nothing back.
I'm waiting for the September announcements and will buy a new projector. Meanwhile I'll tear into this one some more and see if I can find the faulty component. I'll report on what I find.
I am done with Optoma. Besides my own HT, I consult with many builders on the construction, equipment installation and acoustic tuning of home theaters in Arizona. Optoma is permanently off of my list as recommended equipment. Their customer "support" has to be among the worst I've ever encountered. They simply have a single canned reply "send it in for repair." Anything requiring effort on their part is simply ignored. What a joke! |

First of all, thanks to Sheridan for the input. I got some VERY interesting results, partly by serindipity.
The way I did this experiment was to solder very small wire to the bulb assembly connector wires, then ran the wires outside of the bulb assembly. I then turned the projector on, waited for the lamp to ignite and then connected the bulb to a voltmeter.
TEST 1
1) With the projector in standby, the bulb had about 50 VAC across it.
2) After turning the projector on and reconnecting the voltmeter, the voltage gradually rose past 130 volts on up to 140 VAC and continued to slowly rise.
3) After about 75-80 seconds, the bulb voltage reached 141.5 volts and at that exact point the bulb went out.
TEST 2
Repeated TEST 1, but oriented the projector on "end" with the end closest to the lens on the floor.
1) The voltage rose to about 138 volts, but not higher.
2) The bulb never extinguished. I continued to monitor the voltage. After about 5 minutes, I left for about 30 minutes. When I returned, everything was still running and the bulb voltage and crept back down to about 120 VAC.
TEST 3
Started at the end of TEST 2, bulb voltage around 120 VAC.
1) Turned the projector "right side up."
2) Bulb voltage rose fairly quickly back up to around 140 VAC. When it got to 141.5 VAC, the bulb extinguished.
TEST 4,5
I repeated TEST 1 with the projector oriented right side up, upside down, and on end (the end farthest from the lense on the floor). In all 3 cases the results of TEST 1 were repeated.
CONCLUSION: I'm beginning to expect a component on the power supply that is sensitive to orientation. I suspect the supply is a switcher, so this may be a timing crystal or part of the switching frequency control.
I am going to try Optoma tech support again. Last time they just sent me an email saying I need to "take it in" for repair. This time I will send the the results of the test and see if I can get a better response. I'll let you know in a day or so. |

Please see a new post I just entered today. I am troubleshooting the same basic issue and will provide updates as I get new data.
I am digging into the inside of this unit and will try to get specific with the experiments as I perform them. My unit failed 6 mos ago (about 500 hrs) and I sent it for non-warranty repair to Spectronix in Colorado. Upon return it worked until yesterday. Now has same exact symptoms. Spectronix appears to be out-of-business so I can't ask them what they replaced (I did originally, but can't find my notes). |
