Topic:   Upconversion for a home 20

Hello, I have recently purchased a Epson home 20 projector. This is a native 480P wide screen projector. So far I love this projector, I am on a tight budget and this fits my needs very well. I do have a couple questions though, I am currently using a Sharp brand progressive scan dvd player and I notice that it shows up as 525P and not 480P. I have read this is the same but I am am confused why it would not show up as 480P as this is the native resolution of the projector. Also I am wondering if a Up conversion player would make the picture any better specifically one with Faroudja processing such as the sylvania player listed here http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-DP170SL8-Upconverting-Compatible-Player/dp/B000N45W8I Thanks for any input anybody has to share! --Nick

Topic:   SD vs HD projector for SD-DVD

I currently have an Epson Home 20, and am thinking about upgrading to an Epson Home 1080. I primarily watch SD-DVDs, but I am intrigued by the dynamic iris of the Home 1080 for increased contrast. Will the upconverted DVD image on the Home 1080 look softer than the native DVD image on the Home 20? Will upgrading give up sharpness in favor of contrast for regular DVDs? Thanks.

Topic:   Epson Home 20 Convergence

I think I might harass Epson into sending me one more, on the off chance that it might accidentally have better convergence than the other three. I'll probably drive over and look at the AE900U the guy has for sale to see if it doesn't display the problem, but I'm not that hopeful. I think I'm going to have to wait until either someone starts making a single chip DLP with lens shift and a big zoom range for well under $2k or I land that fancy-pants high-paying job. Hope I'm not sensitive to rainbow artifacts!

Topic:   Epson Home 20 Convergence

Hi all, thanks for your continued interest. I took a look at a test pattern from a DVD, and Sansui might be on to something concerning the blue shift. The menu's on the pj might not be the best test. I took a picture of the test pattern projection, and it's pretty clear that the red panel is offset above the green, and the blue seems to be displaced to the right. Another thing I noticed upon closer inspection is that the right side of the screen is noticeably better than the left side. All of the pictures I've taken have been of the left side. I found a guy on craigslist who is selling what he claims to be a new in the box Panny AE900U for $850. Says he got it as a gift and has no use for it--lives with his parents, and his room is too small for a pj. I'm sorely tempted, but am hesitant to pull the trigger and buy a pj with no warranty. Of course the AE900U is a 3 panel LCD setup as well. I'd hate to spend a bunch more money just to end up with the same problem (but with more pixels). Plus, the guy COMMUNCATES LIKE THIS WITHOUT USING PUNCTUATION AN STUFF LIKE THAT. Makes me a little leery.

Thanks for the replies. Every time I call Epson, they call me crazy for a couple minutes before sending me out yet another projector with a convergence problem--I don't understand how people fail to notice these things. When I sold off my RPTV after I got the pj, I thought I was finished futzing around with convergence (at least with the tv, I could adjust it, even if it never got perfect and always drifted over time). BTW, the picture I posted is from the best of the three pjs I've had come thru. If Epson won't take the pj back, I might sell the thing on ebay... but then it's not clear what pj I'd get to replace it. I wouldn't want to spend too much over $1k, and most all the budget models seem to be either 3 panel (Panny AE 900U, the other epson models) or they don't offer enough placement flexibility to work in my space (most of the optoma pjs). I need to mount the pj so the lens is about a foot below the top of the screen, so pjs designed for coffee table/ceiling mounting don't work unless they have lens shift.
