I have new Toshiba HD-XA2 hi def dvd player. It has 5.1 analog outputs. I have just ordered a DB25 cable with rca terminations on the other end to go from my prepro to the dvd player.
Even though my player plays hi def discs, I have chosen to play only standard def discs because of the outstanding quality of the upconverted picture and the larger screen area of the 4:3 format on my setup.
Since I will only be playing standard def dvd's, I will be limited to DD 5.1 and DTS. I won't be playing the hi-def sound formats. Will using a 5.1 analog connection via DB25 from the prepro to the dvd player be better than a digital coax cable that I am now using?
Somehow, on my screen and projector, the hi-def discs don't seem to be as bright as the standard def discs....and I get a much bigger picture on the standard format discs in 4:3.
I have a 16 ft by 12 ft screen. Please see my system page on the link below. I appreciate your help on this....
thanks......mitch

gwlaw99,..... you mentioned that the average home theater only needs a projector with 350 lumens so why would I need 3000 lumens. I'm sure you'll have to agree that my setup is far from average. My screen is 16 feet wide and 12 feet tall. My ceiling is 22 feet high and made of solid concrete, so a ceiling mount is out of the question. Click on the link below to see my system.
I'm currently using a Sharp XR-20X. It has 2300 lumens and it does a very good job. However it only has component connections and I need a digital connection in order to have my dvd upconverted to 1080i. I can only get 480p on component.
I purchased a Sharp DT-500 with HDMI and it was an excellent projector, however I need the projector to be 30 feet from the screen. At 1200 lumens it was not bright enough from that far away to fill up a screen my size.
So, that is why I need a projector with at least 3000 lumens and the use would be home theater and viewing event photos. |

Will Analog to HDMI Upconversion display 1080i/720p on my projector?
I was reading the spec and features on the Onkyo website about their new receiver. Under the sub-heading of connectivity it listed "Analog to HDMI Upconversion"

I have an HD-dvd player that is HDMI audio and video capable. My projector will only allow component video connections. Because of the component video connections, I can only get upconvert to 480p when standard def dvd's are used. The projector will play hi-def dvds at 1080i and 720p via component video connection.
Does this mean that if I route the component video connection of my projector through the video section of the receiver,it will via analog to HDMI conversion allow the standard def dvd to be played back at 1080i or 720p?
Does it mean that if I go from my projector to the receiver with component, then go from my receiver to the dvd player with HDMI ...does it mean that I will be able to get a 1080i or 720p picture from a standard dvd disc?
By the way, the upconverted standard def picture in 480p is very good on my Toshiba HD-A2 dvd player. I'm considering the Onkyo receiver to see if it will get me 720p or 1080i to make it even better.
....thanks for your help.....mitch |
