hi guys
well after reading through all the hometheatre setups i am very envious of most of you with the high res projectors and great sound systems,i wasnt really going to contribute anything as all my gear is either old stereo gear and a 840X480 benq projector, anyway after having it set up for about a month and having a few friends around i have decided to contribute my setup here for those who are also on a really tight budget. first off my projector is the benq 5120 dlp.now there is quite a bit written about the rainbow effect and reading all this i was sure my missus would certainly see it and probably refuse to watch anything on it.anyway i set it up first off the first day i recieved it and though it was nite and really dark i screened it onto a light pink wall with a few uneven surfaces on it,house is a 100 year old cottage so walls although nice character are a bit rough in texture.first dvd we watched was schrek, animation yes.well the picture i thought was really suberb although i spent most of the nite looking away to get a glimpse of the rainbow.anyway sure enough at times i got a glimpse of it but nothing in the least to distract me.at the end of the movie i was waiting for the wife to say that she could see rainbows and that it effected her. "NOTHING" her remarks were that was fantastic.so i thought i wont mention the rainbow yet.next nite i put on waking ned devine, watched the movie right through same reaction by the wife, still no mention of the rainbow.fird nite we watched a football match"aussie rules" which was coming out of a HD card in my computer and was simply great in HD MODE.ALTHOUGH THE 5120 DOESNT DO TRUE HD it was a really sharp picture.then we watched march of the penguins,a doco on the penguins down in antartic, now with all that white and contrast with the black penguins i was sure she would see somthing, end of the show nothing.so i said to her have you seen any rainbow effect yet, answer was i dont think so,so i rewound the rolling credits at the end and taught her how to see the rainbow effect,,how dumb was that, now when we watch a dvd she says ,yes i saw some rainbow then, now honestly the rainbow effect is there ,but if no one tells you about it im sure a lot of people would never really notice it,they may occasionally see it but not knowing what it is supposed to be it just doesnt bother those people "generally".ANYWAY BACK TO MY BUDGET SYSTEM,so the projector is the benq 5120,i have the hooked up my 5 year old phillips prologic amplifier,60 watts rms out of the front two channels,ie 2x 60 watts RMS.only about 15 watts out of rear speakers and 30 watts rms out of the centre speaker, the dvd player i am using is a pioneer 535 no progressive scan and generally using s video lead as the component leads on some region dvd,s get a slight shimmer or shake.the dvd audio is by 2 x rca out of the dvd player into an old jvc graphic eaquilizer which is 15 watts per channel.this is then fed into my phillips amplifier, the centre speaker is one that came with the phillips surround amplifier as are the two rear speakers.however most of the oomph comes from the two front kenwood speakers that i have had for over 20 years,100 watt rms each rating, they have a 15 inch bass driver,6" midrange and a 2" tweeter, they have a 3 position switch inside the front cover for changing room acoustics.they weigh in at around 30 kilos each.now i am probably biased here a bit but when i play a dvd through them and crank the volume up for the proper effect the whole system to me sounds fantastic, and too everyone else that sits in on the show, just finnished watching the moodly blues concert done at royal albert hall about 2003 i think and the sound was amazing clarity.mainly with the front 2 speakers doing 90% of the work.but even in surround sound"prologic" the sound is absoloutly enthralling.even a mate who has the ae 900 panasonic and a 5000 dollars sound system cant believe how good the overall experience is,now i am sure if we put both setups side by side we both would probably pick both his projector and sound system to be better, but in saying this every thing is relevent here, there is nothing to compare it side by side and to the person consumed in the experince of my setup they are more than satisfied with what is going on around them and in front of their eyes,i guess what i am trying to get over here is sure buy the best you can afford and enjoy it for what you have, but if you are tight for loose finances to buy what you would really like to buy, dont worry ,buy what you can afford and use what you have,as i said you dont have anything side by side to compare too so you can still experince the big screen thing ,and im sure as i have it sure beats the crap out of watching a little 42"plasma or even bigger from 12 to 15 feet away, the next thing i have on order is a budget HD tuner, this should be here in about a week so i have ordered also a dvi cable as it has a dvi connection to go into my dvi on the projector, after that i have to try and make a 90"homemade diogonal screen, which at least will be another improvment on my pink wall.ill keep you all updated on this .hope there are some of you out there that were interested in my budget setup,as i said at the start ,sure i would like the latest and greatest but you can only buy what you can afford,
cheers for now
