Topic:   How bad is the VB on the AE700?

I mostly use my AE700 for Xbox gaming, but I've watched a couple of movies on it too (it reports 206 hours of use now). I really looked hard for vertical banding when I first got it (in November), but couldn't detect anything amiss. However, more recently, I was playing Mercenaries (which has manual camera controls) and at one point, by slowly rotating the camera, I finally saw the dreaded VB. It was actually pretty jarring, as I wasn't even looking for it at the time. With my particular projector, the banding seemed to show up more easily on medium brightness scenes with a lot of red/brown than on bright scenes with a lot of sky blue. Reading posts on here, I realize that I recently started leaving the projector in standby all the time, so that might be the cause of my problems. I adjusted the flicker settings in the service menu and started turning the unit completely off again, so we'll have to see if the problem comes back. For the few times when I have noticed it, I'll rate the problem 4/10 because it is pretty distracting, but until just this past month, it wasn't a problem at all. I guess time will tell if this story has a happy or sad ending (and a whole-hearted recommendation or a cautious one).

I've had the Panny 700 for 5 months now projecting onto a 10ft wide 1.2 Gain screen from 19ft away. Still looks as fantastic as the day I got it out of the box. A bargain at the price. The zoom makes placement a piece of cake, quiet too.

Topic:   AE700U heat distortion?

I have had my AE700U for a few months now, and am quite happy with it, but for an artifact that is rather distracting. I can sometimes see a "billowing cloud" effect moving left-to-right on the screen. I assume this to be heat distortion in the projection path. It only happens in scenes with bright white backgrounds, and seemingly more likely watching standard definition signals than HD. The projector is further from the screen than I would like, so the zoom is at its extreme. There also is a setting to increase the fan speed, but that seemed to have no effect on the artifact nor on the volume of the fan. Anybody else seen anything like this?

Topic:   the best for the money

I'm running the AE700u and 92" Da-lite Da-Snap and love the whole setup whether I'm watching DVD, Sat or digital pictures from my Roku. With about 200 hours on the unit so far I've seen no VB. When I was researching projectors, I was quite concerned about a unit that would handle some ambient lite and still get me a great picture. I was plesantly suprised to see how crisp the picture is and how quiet the unit is since it's mounted right above my couch. No need for DLP with an LCD project like the AE700. You can't go wrong with this unit!
