Topic:   if not pan700 what?

VB is short for Verticle Banding and is where bands run down the image in uniform spacing. It's kind of a 'light', 'dark' alternating stripe pattern which has been found on both the Panasonic AE range and the Sanyo Z range due to the same Epsom LCD panels used by both brands. The thing is, not every unit displays the problem. Some do and some don't and some do worse than others !! Panasonic have released a firmware upgrade which apparently addresses this problem.

Further to the VB issue with the AE700, Apparently Panasonic have introduced a firmware upgrade which all but removes any sign of VB. If you do go for an AE700, check that it has this upgrade.

Topic:   Best Projector For Back of Room

Go with the Panasonic PT-AE700U. It is the only projector available (in this price range) with a 2X zoom lens, so you can put the VP at the back of the room on a shelf. This was the main reason I went with the Panny 700, because I did not want the VP stuck in the middle of the room where it is an audible and visible distraction. Plus the Panny has the horizontal and vertical lens shift feature which makes set up alignment a snap. On top of that the picture quality is superb- NO screen door effect or pixilation. You will read a lot on this forum about the vertical banding problem on the Panny 700, this is usually caused by leaving the VP in a perpetual stand-by condition. If you totally power down between use, you will probably never see any VB- I have never seen it in 6 months of use.

If the VB on the 700 is bad, or at least annoying, and you get rainbow from DLP's, then what is the unit to get...is everything a compromise? I am not in a location that I can pre view units so I get my information from this kind of forum..not the dealers. I dont want to bring home a unit and then

Topic:   How bad is the VB on the AE700?

I have had my Panny 700 for 25 days now and it would be a great unit if there weren't any VB. But I do have the Vertical Banding issue with mine. I am very picky about the image quality. I bought the Panny to replace my 3 year old XGA res. Liesegang DV335 LCD projector, which has a 4:3 ratio- watching widescreen movies with it, I saw the pixels-too much screendoor effect. So the Panny sounded great with the higher resolution, a native widescreen format and the smooth-screen technology. But I am personally so annoyed by the vertical banding issue, that I would say it bothers me to a point that I can't enjoy the movie anymore. So, how bad is it?-6 to 7 out of ten-mine is bad! My old Liesgang shows some screendoor effect due to the lower resolution, and the colors are not as great as on the Panny, but I never had any VB on that old thing. Please, please-if anybody has found a way of solving the Vertical Banding issue on the Panasonic, let me know how to do it. I can't believe how many people claim to not be able to see VB on their AE 700's. I see it in every low contrast scene with medium to light colors. So, unless all movies you intend to watch are playing at night or in the dark, you will see VB on your Panny.
