A pinkish splotch has recently appeared lower center of screen.
Everything else seems as normal.
Does this indicate a new lamp required ? or something else - maybe dust blob ?.
Its a Sony HS51, 1700hrs on lamp.
Many thanks |

I ran across this forumn while looking for information on purchasing a replacement bulb for my projector. I was a taken back by the cost to replace these bulbs and am quite angry that my current bulb lasted <= 300 hrs. We use the the projector for mainly watching movies and during football season. My home is relatively new (only 3 yrs. old) so I was not a happy camper about this product, that I thought was of high quality, failing so soon. I cetainly paid enough for it. I hope this information gets to the correct individuals at Sony because I think there needs to be a recall on either the bulbs or the projectors themselves. |

I am using a Directv hs20 HD PVR as input via HDMI to my sony projector. Over the past 2 months, I have noticed a problem that occurs occasionally only on startup.
On startup, the entire picture has a completely different color scheme - the menus are in brown and faces are blue. I can "fix" this by switching from whatever format I am in to a different format. For example, if the channel I startup on is SD, I can switch to a HD channel to correct it. The occurs because something inside the projector starts "clicking" and the screen resolution changes. I can never fix the problem without changing formats. The problem never occurs again while the projector is on.
I am trying to identify if I have a projector issue, a Directv receiver issue or a bulb issue (4 years old, 1900 hours).
This doesn't happen when I use my DVD player, but then again I don't use it nearly as often.
Thanks for the assistance. |

I was surprised I couldn't find an earlier thread on the question I am about to ask. I am sure many of us will be in this position already or over the next year or two.
I am fast approaching the time when I will need to make a decision on what to do about my projector needs. I have an almost 4 year old Sony VPL-HS50 that has a little over 2,000 hours on the bulb. I am expecting that I will have to replace the bulb within the next 6 months.
I would like everybody's opinion on either getting a new bulb or replacing the entire unit. To make matters easier, I have already decided that I do not want to move up to a 1080P projector since 80 - 90 % of my viewing is HD Directv and in my situation I just don't see the benefit of spending 3-4k to move up to 1080P.
If replacing the unit is your recommendation, I welcome any projector suggestions.
Thanks for your assistance. |

I spent an hour online with Sony Tech support last night (completely useless) plus TWO hours on the telephone with them today (again, completely useless). A brand-new, ordered direct from Sony, lamp that we had installed less than 6 weeks has developed a neon blue glowing spot that gets thrown onto the screen. Sony insists that it can't be the lamp because I didn't get an error message! Oh my gosh, can they do anything besides read a que card!! Unbeknownst to the woman, there's really nothing but the lamp in the box. Once you take the lamp out, it's an empty plastic box. Ok, I overstate it, but only slightly. Sony's helpline is ridiculous. I'm giving it a try again tomorrow the old fashioned way - I'm called the corporate office and asking to speak with the CEO. I can't afford to replace this lamp every month and a half. Right now I'd like to rip the damn thing off my ceiling and throw it out with the garbage. grrrrrrr |
