Topic:   Questions about Cables and Connections

Crispin, Thank you so very much for your prompt feedback. All of this started when I needed a portable business projector (I do some on-the-road PowerPoint training). After receiving the Optoma, next thing you know, I was buying a screen and watching some old movies. Now I'm in big trouble. My next purchase will be a better projector after a few more training paychecks and some research! Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated as well--(if I get some leads, I'll start watching for bargains!). My eventual plan is to buy a better home theater projector permanently mounted and then lug around the optoma for presentations. As for the cables, does it make a significant difference to go with the gold plated, fancy connector types instead of the regular high quality cables? Thanks again!

Topic:   Questions about Cables and Connections

Good morning, all. I am new to home theater and really appreciate this forum. I have read and read to try to get at least a basic understanding of home theater, and at this point I would appreciate your advice and feedback. I have the following: Optoma EP732 DLP (a gift and only 4 lamp hours--will replace eventually--year or so down the road--but cannot afford to do so now) Oppo DV-970HD (I bought this new with an eye towards eventual upgrades) Onkyo HT-H680 (would eventually like to get a better sound system, but this one will have to do for several years) Da-Lite 1.1 gain screen, , 72 x 72 (will pull down from ceiling in front of TV) Older CTR TV (won't replace until it dies) I have figured out my room placement for the most part, so won't go into that here unless you ask me to. Suffice it to say, the room is around 20 feet long by 15 feet wide. Because the room has significant attic access, I'll be running most cables through the walls and ceilings. Light is easily managed--there is no window anywhere to deal with--just one door opening. I will be mounting the projector with a universal mount. I am confused as to what to connect to what and how. I am thinking the connections go like this?: DVD to Home Onkyo sound system CRT TV to DVD and to Onkyo sound system Projector to DVD through the component cable (That means a rather long cable, perhaps greater than 35 feet through the ceiling. That also requires a cable that has the three component ends to go into my DVD with a VGA cable at the other end for my projector. Right? Other than buying a quality cable, are there other things to consider here? Where are the best places to buy quality cables?) Am I on the right track? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!
