I was actually entertaining the Sanyo PLV-WF10, however I was concerned about the fan noise. Is it too loud for home theater use?

I would say that you may want to check out the new Sanyo WF-10 (or something like that) which will give you 4000 lumens. We have installed them and they are fantastic.
But, for the higher lumen output, you gain a lot more projector noise and a loss in black level detail. Unless you know you aren't going to be able to control the light in the room the projector is going in, why not go with a home theater projector that is actually designed for home theater use? Lower lumens, but higher contrast, video processors designed for DVD & HD playback at the front, not a revamped Powerpoint playing projector in your home?
In a light controlled room, just a few hundred lumens is plenty to make a stunningly bright image that you will be able to enjoy immensely. In a non-light controlled room, you will never truly have 'black' because the screen is white (or gray) and you will perceive it as something other than black. So, going with a non-theater type projector won't really hurt your viewing nearly as much as the ambient light will no matter what.
