This is ripped from my convergence post.. In summary, I got a pj used that someone had worked on.. Images weren't 'good' (his words).. If ya really wanna read up, just look for my Panny L592U 'convergence' post.. This topic, however, is more about the bottom half of this post. What should I do, basically.. Invest in fixing this thing (sending it to a repair shop out of state somewhere) or canning it, and buying a $300 el-cheapo unit from Radio Shack or similar.. Only a hobby/tinkering toy, looking to spend the bare minimum here.. I know the post is 'long' but please give it a reading, see if you have any suggestions. Thanks!
Welp, just as an update..
Good: I actually managed to 'dial' in the lcd slides pretty well (well, good enough to make me think, WoW! I did it!). Ended up not using that pattern displayed.. Was too friggin' hard to tell which set of lines was which.. In the end, I used my Xbox and Star Wars I, lol.. Various parts, the first line of text was the best, then went through the THX optimizer..
Bad: That step, was when I truly learned of the problems ahead of me. See, I THOUGHT one of the lcd slides wasn't forward or back enough, causing one of the colors to be 'blurry' when the main focus was used (you know, when it's "crisp" on some things, other color areas don't look quite right, but when you 'blur' it a bit, suddenly, even with low quality RCA video feed, the small text is VERY easy to read, lol.. That kind of thing). I'll snap some pics later of this. The real problem I discovered and am now smacking myself for not noticing it on certain main menus like the focus and zoom menu, where those words are in LARGE text across the screen in cyan color.. That problem is that I seem to have odd-placed vertical lines. They were noticable even back on that second image I posted (the one of the PSOne main menu), but not actually in that image.. The CD icon, off-picture, lower right, that these "jagged" vertical lines, that at the time I assumed were caused by the various improperly aligned lcd slides, IE, I was seeing the red cd corner, the blue cd corner, and the green cd corner. So now I think something else, some controller board, like the one all the lcd's plug into, might be bad as well..
Looked up service areas, and low and behold none are here in my state, so no chance of me driving this somewhere, even if the cost would be affordable. Don't know how much that board would run, and not sure at this point if I want to even risk buying one, only to find out that it isn't the problem.. Anyone experienced this before?
Anyone know anyplace that might be interested in somehow safely shipping a projector back and forth, and maybe barter a bit for payment? I've got an extra lens and lcd slide set that I'm told are good, especially now that I am almost certain it's not the lcd's that were the problem. Sad part is, if the fella before me wouldn't have bought and swapped out the lens and then the lcd's all this thing probably needed was maybe that controller board (or the board that mounts on top of it that I have sitting vertically to adjust the lcd's). Anyhow, if anyone knows a place that might do this, or somewhere in AZ that has good rates and for whatever reason isn't listed on the Panny service website but trusted and known for good work, please let me know.
Furthermore.. I could end up torn between just buying a new 'el-cheapo' unit, if it would be cheaper than fixing this one.. Looking for any advice/recommendations.. Knowing that some background would be handy, lemme fill ya in...
Got this one to tinker with, as I mentioned I think on the first post. I have currently a Mitsu DLP WD-73927 RP (73") unit in my 'home theater living room', and not looking to replace it. This pj was just going to be for fun.. Hook it up to my PC (which has of course VGA, as well as component outs), Xbox360, Xbox, PS2, whatever.. Just something to have fun with. Was awesomely intrigued by that Halloween thread and would've LOVED to do something like that with it.. (play movies through the window or a sheet in garage). I guess I'm torn and unknown because like I said, I really wasn't in the market for one, so I've little research on the matter, all I know is this site reports this pj to be a high $6k figure pj, and it must've been for a reason. Thinking some $300 unit, like that radio Shack one, would be crap next to it, but boy would I hate to sink, say $400-$1000+ into this thing only to find out that the little $300 unit is just as good, if not better..
As always, thanks in advance for anything you guys have to say. |
