My church has a 3M MP8795 projector installed in our sanctuary that has developed the same problem for the second time. The first time was under warranty and this time it is not covered so this is very frustrating since the unit cost some serious money.
The problem is an amoeba shaped blob of blurriness in the red channel only around the lower right side of the image. I don't have pictures to post right now but basically anything red in the image in that area gets blurred, like a gaussian blur filter was applied in Photoshop. The other color channels are fine, as is anything outside the blob area in the red channel. 3M said that the problem last time was due to "broken lens prism assembly" and that it would cost $5000 to fix this time.
We also have a Viewsonic PJ1060 projector that uses the exact same body casing (not sure who OEM'ed for who. EDIT: Looked it up and Hitachi makes these units) and it has been going strong with only bulb changes for about 8 years now and much rougher handing since it is a portable unit versus the fixed mounting on the 3M with the problem.
Has anybody ever seen anything like this before? I'm not familiar with the internals of these projectors much although I know the basic principle of operation. It doesn't seem like a lens prism is a moving part that would break that easily and if it did, then why only cause blur in that one blob area? Is there an environmental cause to this or is this a weak point of this model of projector? |
