Simon,
I had the opportunity to work with a traveling "Stomp" like troupe recently, at our local theatre. They were looking to do something similar.
We used an NEC GT2150 (2800 lumens) with their short throw 1:1 lens.
We put it on a 15x20 rear screen, rigged onto the flybars. I ended up with a 22 foot throw, due to keystone correction issues.
Working with the LD to keep the cans off the screen made this project work very well, and every one was happy.
I use a double stack of the NEC's when working this theatre for a corporate client, when we do thier annual gala. Much more wash and spots in use, for I-Mag. I'd like something brighter, but the double stack output works well.
If this is a single use situation, you may want to work with a local rental house, and see if you can get a deal (trade for tickets,etc..).
I'd ask myself if a small theatre company can recoupe the cost of both a projector AND lens AND lamps, if it was only going to be used sparingly.
Cheers,
Larry
