Topic:   Looking For A New Projector

Hello ProjectorCentral community! I'm the new guy! Greetings! Well, I should not say new really. This site is what I used for reviews when I first purchased a projector for Home Theater purposes, nine years ago. My first, and so far only, projector, is the Studio Experience 17SF ( http://www.projectorcentral.com/Studio_Exp.-Cinema_17SF.htm ) that I purchased from Boxlight. Otherwise classified as the Optoma H55. I love it! It has suited my needs for many years, and was very good for the time. It has only had one problem, with the front fan, but was sent in for repairs and had the fan replaced, and has worked flawlessly ever since. So here is my story and what brings me to post today, nearly a decade after my original purchase (glad to see projectorcentral is still around). A few weeks ago, I was asked to use my projector at a banquet. Setting up for the room it was to be used in, afterward, all the settings had to be re-configured after bringing it back home. The process I use for this is the old-school method, of color bars and such. The other day, I noticed something... my yellows were kind of dingy, and the whole picture just looked a bit washed out. Not nearly as bright and vibrant with colors as I thought it was. This is not something I typically notice while watching a movie... but the bars showed it. The 17SF is only a 1000 lumens 1000:1 contrast ratio I do belive. I use it for movies and gaming. It is hooked up through a receive to a PC, DVD Player, and gaming console. After seeing Blu-Ray and viewing the whole HD experience, it made me kinda want a projector with HD capabilities (1080p), and that had a brighter picture, and could handle colors better. Well, anyways, my projector is just a bit dated, and I have been looking at what they had on the market now. They seem to have improved greatly. Low-budget models seem to easily hit over 15,000:1 contrast ratio I am seeing. Even still looking for something on a budget, it seems prices have come down and the technology has improved. SVGA and VGA appears to be nearly non-existent while long ago they were plentiful. Anyways, I was interested in one that can show colors well and bright! With 1080p HDMI support and one thing I really wanted, that I do not have on mine, was digital lens shift if possible. Any suggestions? Also, what is the best way to choose? My current projector I kind of took a chance on and read all the reviews for a month or two before purchase. There is not really any stores around here that sell them, except for BestBuy, but they seem to sell 640x480 - 800x600 (SVGA and VGA) projectors (EWWWW!), and even those they do not have on display. So is there a way to see the quality of picture in action, before a purchase? (Something a bit better than YouTube I mean. ;) Any ideas, suggestions, and thoughts are greatly appreciated. Lemme know if there is a great projector out there for me (on a budget) that can easily blow the 17SF away. Thanks! -CJ
